Unnamed Cemetery

There is a cemetery in the southeast corner of section eleven (in the eastern part of the township) located on Brandywine Creek north of 400 North. Not only its name has faded from memory and records but its location is undiscovered.

There is, however, an intriguing story told about this neighborhood. During the earliest days, four men (the passing years have erased their names) who were searching for land traveled to the wilderness of Hancock County. They camped near Brandywine Creek while hunting for food.

They found that game was plentiful, decided their search was ended, and plunged into carving a small settlement: cleared land, planted crops, and built log houses.

Two men stayed to protect the remote outpost while two hurried back east to fetch all four families to the Indiana frontier.

Instead of happy reunions when the travelers arrived, they found the grim sight of burned homes and crops – and the defenders killed by attacking Indians.

Graves for the two men were dug, thus, the burying grounds were created.
