Park Cemetery

Park Cemetery is located on the east sde of State Road 9, Six blocks south of the court house square in Greenfield.

The original tract of six acres was covered by timber when it was purchased on 28 April 1863 by the City of Greenfield for $450. The City Council adopted the plan and plat for laying off lots 7 April 1865.

History of Hancock County by J.H. Binford, states the 1882 condition of the burying grounds, “The plan of the grounds is good; but the drives or streets are unmade, and the grounds are unkept, unbecoming the dignity of the city.”

Today, Park Cemetery is owned and operated by the City of Greenfield through a Board of Regents, consisting of four appointed members. The Board of Regents elects its own chairman and secretary and has full charge and control of the cemetery.

Many acres of land have been added to the original six and the more than 5,000 grave sites are extremely well maintained by a superintendent and staff of workmen.
