Mt. Gilead/Reeves Cemetery

Mt. Gilead/Reeves Cemetery is in section thirteen located at the intersection of 375 North, Fortville Pike and 400 North. Mt Gilead Church was organized in 1827 and known as Brandywine Baptism Church whose first members were: Samuel and Rachel Jackson, Benjamin and Jane Spillman and James and Elizabeth Reeves. On 10 May 1835 James and Elizabeth Reeves conveyed one acre of land “to Benjamin Spillman, John Ogg, and Elijah Leary, Trustees of the Baptist Church called Brandywine and to their successors in office forever, for fifty cents lawful money, for the sole use of Divine Worship.”

In 1882, almost fifty years later, the building was described as “an old frame building, antique in style and void of paint.” However, it served the members well as services were held until 1910.

Today, the building is gone, a chain-link fence encloses the graves and the grass is cut during the growing season. Many of the grave markers at the north end have toppled to the ground.
